YORK – Aging Services continues to assist senior citizens in York County in many ways, helping older citizens stay in their homes and have high quality of life. This past week, Jill Engel, a representative of Aging Partners out of Lincoln, was here to make the agency’s annual funding request with the York County Commissioners. This money is then used to ensure state and federal dollars continue to flow into the York County aging program which is run by Lori Byers.
During the last year, 557 individuals received 13,000 units of service in the county. The program is reaching 18% of the population who are 65 years old and older. And of that 18%, 42% of them are impoverished, Engel said. She said that was an 11% increase of those in economic need in that age bracket. As the population continues to age, more people will be needing services, she said. In the last year, York County Aging Services provided 3,600 congregate meals at the York Senior Center, 457 meals at the Leisure Home in York, as well as meals at the McCool Community Center and 930 meals in a new program in Bradshaw. They also provided foot clinics at the York Senior Center. It was also noted how more programs and informational presentations have been held at the senior center in York in the last year. York County Aging Services provided 440 hours of individual in-home assistance as well. Byers said they continue to look at different funding sources as well. The commissioners will review the $42,262 funding request as the budget process continues. Comments are closed.
