YORK COUNTY – This past week, York County Weed Superintendent Mitch Huxoll presented his annual report to the county commissioners, asking for them to approve it before it is sent on to state officials, as required by law. The county’s weed superintendent is responsible for monitoring and treating noxious weed infestations.
“Infestations were about the same this last year, with the musk thistles coming up a little in the creek bottoms,” Huxoll said. “I’ve been working with producers on that.” When an infestation of noxious weeds is discovered on private property, Huxoll notifies the landowners who are responsible for getting rid of it. In ditch areas – county right-of-way areas – Huxoll sprays noxious weeds when found. “I’ve been spraying pretty heavy on the leafy spurge areas, so that’s been better.” Commissioner Andy Bowman asked Huxoll about a comment in the report in which Huxoll talked about purchasing chemicals, “and being able to afford the right ones.” “Can you explain your statement?” Bowman asked Huxoll. Huxoll said he doesn’t use restricted chemicals and he has to use certain types as noxious weeds become immune to those which have been used over a previous period of time.” All the commissioners, with the exception of Bowman, voted to approve the report and send it on to the state.
