Bids to be opened soon for fire suppression system in jail

YORK – Bids will be opened on July 22 for the project to install a fire suppression system in the York County Jail.

​During this week’s committee reports from the York County Commissioners, Randy Obermier reported how a preconstruction meeting was held at the jail and “one contractor came. This contractor has worked within the penal system, in jails and such, before. So we will see how the bids come in for this project in two weeks.”
This project is being required by the state fire marshal’s office.
Also during the county board’s committee meeting:

• Obermier said he received information regarding a change in the state program which would have greatly expanded high speed internet in the rural area of the county. The change would be a great reduction in households served, compared to what had been the original intent. “NACO (the Nebraska Association of County Officials) said to not worry yet as the bid awarding process is not yet completed, but right now, it doesn’t look great.”
• The clerk’s office continues to take applications for general assistance in the absence of any other departments taking on that responsibility. Obermier said he still plans to talk with YC3, an outside agency, about possibly working with the county in that capacity.
• Commissioner Andy Bowman said he received a call from an individual south of Bradshaw about a drainage problem. Bowman said he and York County Highway Superintendent Harvey Keim met with the individual to see the issue. “It looks like a culvert will need to be replaced as this drainage problem needs to be addressed.”
• Bowman said he was planning to attend a safety committee meeting the next day and Commissioner LeRoy Ott was planning to attend a meeting for aging services as well.
