Budget talks start as commissioners meet with department heads

YORK – York County Commissioners Daniel Grotz and Randy Obermier, who sit on the county’s budget committee, have had a meeting with all the county’s department heads, as the budget process for 2026 has started.

​Grotz and Obermier talked about the meeting during the committee report section of this past week’s county board meeting.
“The budget process is rolling,” Obermier said.
The department heads have been tasked with formulating their proposed budgets for the 2026-27 fiscal year, which will be presented to the budget committee. Eventually, the proposed budget will go before the full county board.
Also during committee reports this past week:

• Commissioner Andy Bowman said the process continues to fill two open positions at the county roads department.
• Commissioner Joe Burgess noted how Blue Valley Community Action will soon be celebrating 60 years of existence.
• Commissioner Deb Robertson attended meetings of the APACE and Region V boards. She said she also attended a county veterans service advisory committee meeting.
• Obermier said a lot of work has been done for the renovation of the space being added to the probation offices. He also noted how there will be a meeting of the Nebraska Association of County Officials coming up.
• Grotz said he would be attending a meeting of the York County Development Corporation, after which he also had a meeting scheduled with the YCDC Director Lisa Hurley. He also wanted to “give a shout out to our corrections staff as this is corrections recognition week.”

The commissioners also went into two executive sessions. The first was to consider three general assistance cases – two of those were approved, one was denied.
The second executive session included representatives of the public defender’s office – no action was taken and the topic was not disclosed.
