YORK COUNTY – It’s the county’s obligation, by state law, to provide office space for District 5 Probation as they do work in York County. And over the years, the county commissioners have provided space for that purpose: in a small space on the second floor of the courthouse, then in a rented office in downtown York. Each time, probation outgrew the provided spaces as the workload increased as did the role of probation in the judicial realm.
Currently, the county provides space for probation near the fairgrounds, in a building owned by the county. But it looks like that space now is too small. “Daniel (Commissioner Grotz) and I met with probation officials recently, and they are just out of room,” explained Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier as he spoke with his fellow commissioners. “They are combining offices in every way they can, they are using the York library for group meetings. They are just out of room. “We have two buildings up north, one being the building which houses the historical society,” Obermier noted. “I think it’s time to reach out to the historical society and hopefully we can start to have a conversation about what to do with that space. I think it’s just time we have a conversation about taking over that whole building and then help the historical society maybe find a different place to exist.” He noted how the historical society is a separate taxing entity, with its own property tax levy. The historical society building is currently filled with historical documents and artifacts. Obermier said “it’s probably time we start to talk about that being relocated and then we could use that space for probation.” Also during last week’s commissioner meeting and committee reports:
