YORK – This week, York County Assessor Kurt Bulgrin brought forward two homestead exemption applications which arrived after the set deadline, noting the county commissioners had the legal ability to allow the exemptions even if they came in late. The homestead exemption application window lasts from February to July 1. He said these two applications came in July 2 and 3.
“Both property owners referenced health issues in their situations,” Bulgrin said. “They did submit their explanation letters on time and they are asking you to approve their exemptions. If you feel the letters meet the standard for late approval, you can approve.” “If we give the late exemption this year, can they be late again next year and receive the exemption?” Obermier asked. “No, you cannot ask for an extension two years in a row,” Bulgrin said. “I will say the homestead exemption makes a big difference for folks, to have these exemptions.” “Do they qualify?” Commissioner Daniel Grotz asked. Bulgrin said they did. “And something to just keep in mind is this is a state program and York County is reimbursed by the state for these property tax exemptions,” Bulgrin said. “The intent of the state is to help qualifying individuals to stay in their homes, keep their homes.” The commissioners voted in favor of approving homestead exemptions for both applicants.
