YORK – This past week, during the York County Commissioners’ regular meeting, they noted, “the saga of court and inmate related costs continues.” As they paid claims, they noted the amounts associated with paying outside counties for assistance in areas such as housing; paying court-appointed attorneys; and covering the medical costs of inmates in the York County Jail.
A review of the last round of county claims showed $10,465.24 was paid to other counties for services; $5,750.07 was paid for inmate medical costs; and $32,192.75 was paid for court services (which includes court-appointed attorneys for indigent defendants). The county is required by state law to pay for medical costs and attorney fees when the public defender’s office cannot represent an indigent individual (due to conflict of interest). The county also has to house inmates in other locations when the jail here is full. Comments are closed.
