YORK – This past week, York County Chief Deputy County Attorney Chris Johnson told the York County Commissioners their office is in the middle of compiling statistics regarding court cases in 2024. The juvenile court statistics for last year show more kids are victims rather than perpetrators. “We are looking at the numbers as far as our caseloads and we had nine fewer juvenile cases however most of those cases have become where they are the victims rather than they are the ones who are in trouble, are the perpetrators,” Johnson said.
“Last year, we terminated the rights of 18 parents” through the court process “and we didn’t terminate that many total in the past six years prior,” Johnson said. “We have a shortage of CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and foster parents.” He added, “our juvenile cases would have been up 30% if we didn’t have our juvenile diversion program.” Johnson said he will be bringing forward statistics regarding district court cases very soon, as adult criminal cases look to have increased this past year as well.
