YORK – The York County Commissioners, convened as the board of equalization, agreed to put a house in York back on the tax rolls and approved corrections as needed. They met with York County Assessor Kurt Bulgrin.
Regarding the house, this was a property tax exempt residence in the past as it had been owned by the Region V Foundation and fulfilled the statutory requirements to be declared exempt. Bulgrin said the property has been sold and is now owned by a private citizen. “So this exemption, which had been allowed by this board in the past, now has to be denied so the property can be put back on the tax rolls.” With the Region V Foundation selling it, it no longer qualifies for exemption, so the commissioners agreed to end the exemption. In other business as the board of equalization, the board denied a valuation protest as it was received long after the deadline had come and gone. They also talked about how “built date” corrections had to be made by the assessor’s office for about 1,000 properties in the county because what was on record was wrong. It appears these alterations, changing the dates the houses were built, were made a number of years ago by someone. And Bulgrin said these weren’t errors within the system – these changes had to have been intentionally made. Bulgrin said his office has been working to correct the errors as they are discovered.
