YORK COUNTY – The York County Commissioners are watching the state legislative session as well as stances being taken by the Nebraska Association of County Officials. This week, Commissioner LeRoy Ott talked about how he has sat in on several days at the legislature and has spent time with staff members of District 24 Senator Jana Hughes.
“If you make an appointment, they will sit down and listen to your concerns and your ideas,” Ott said. York County Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier acknowledged “we all got a letter from the state judicial branch as they want to take back the district court clerk positions.” What that means is there is a suggestion to make the district court clerk a state employee rather than a county employee as it is now. “NACO opposes this move as it would be a loss of local control as the district court clerk is now elected by us,” Obermier said. He also noted there are 13 pages of bills which would affect counties, which was put together by NACO for county leaders to review. “There’s everything in there from inheritance tax to EPIC, and there will be hearings coming up during which we might be asked testify,” Obermier added.
