YORK – York County has joined three other counties, through an interlocal agreement, in applying for federal grant funds to be used for bridge projects. By banding together, the counties can apply for federal grants with a likelihood of having better results than if they had applied on their own. And with the grant program requiring a 20% local match, this is more affordable of a program because the grants are large and most counties couldn’t afford to go it alone.
York County joins Hamilton, Hall and Adams Counties in this effort. This week, the York County Commissioners agreed to the arrangement as they will be applying for a grant toward engineering, design and planning of bridge projects. York County Highway Superintendent Harvey Keim told the county commissioners the funds, if awarded, would be used for bridge projects in York County on Road 3 (near Camp Kateri by McCool Junction) and on Road 11. He said the Road 11 bridge is about 100 years old and his department has already placed weight restrictions on that particular structure. Keim added how the Road 3 bridge “will be expensive, probably costing between $1.2 and $1.5 million.” Commissioner Andy Bowman said the local cost share of 20% is paid by each county for each of their own projects.
