County will see 17% increase in property insurance cost

YORK – York County is going to see what a lot of counties – and individual property owners – are going to see in the next year . . . higher property insurance costs.

​That’s thanks to high claims a couple of years ago thanks to hailstorms and other natural disasters.
York County Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier said the county got its notification from NIRMA (the county’s property insurance carrier) “and we are looking at a 17% increase” in premium.
This was one topic during reports made during this past week’s regular meeting of the York County Commissioners.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting:

• Allison O’Neill, clerk magistrate for the York County Court, met with the board, noting “I’m very aware of where the county court budget is sitting. This is due to situations out of our control. I have been working with Randy (Obermier) regarding this situation. I’m asking for a transfer (of funds) to cover the shortfall.”

The county’s fiscal year is coming to an end – it will close out at the end of the month and it appears the county court is going to be over budget. As Obermier noted, this situation is impossible to predict when the budget is being created as there is no way to know what attorney needs are going to be.
O’Neill said, “We have had a lot of increases in juvenile cases. The county court is very busy.”

• Obermier said he continues to talk to Avery Blum from YC3 about that agency working with the county in the arena of general assistance.
• He also said there was a broadband meeting recently and the numerous project areas in York County (for the installation of high speed internet) have all been bid out by contractors, “which is good news” when it comes to expanding broadband in the rural area of the county.
