The York County Historical Association has recently made major changes with new board members and active committees – and they are moving toward a change of location. For many years, the historical association collection has been housed in a county-owned building near the fairgrounds. That will likely change this year.
Amy Pohl and Dr. Jarod Pack, members of the historical association board, spoke with the York County Commissioners this past week, talking about the revitalization effort of the organization. “We are looking to move to a new location, we are excited about that,” Pohl said. Pohl is the current president of the board. Pack, who is also the chairman of the York University History Department, said everyone on the board “is excited for the next opportunities. We have a lot of amazing stuff in the collection and we want to highlight those, have a place for people to actually see it all. This will take some time, but we are excited for the future.” Commissioner Andy Bowman, who also sits on the historical association board, said the members have looked at a downtown building, which is for rent, “where the collection could be moved. It is a historical building and would fit our needs perfectly. Hopefully, we will make a move on that and we hope to be moved by September.” He reiterated how the board wants to showcase the items in the collection. It was also noted how a committee is currently cataloging all the items. “We plan to be very transparent throughout the entire process and keep the public informed along the way,” Pohl said. “Although the historical society is not a county office, if any of us on the budget committee – me, Daniel (Commissioner Grotz), Mary (Melby, county clerk) – can be of any help with your budgeting work or that type of thing, just let us know,” offered Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier. It’s been several years since the historical association has filed a tax levy, although it is a taxing entity. While the levy has historically been very, very small (a fraction of a cent per $100 of valuation), it had been income for the entity. It appears the entity will file a levy this year and a budget will be created. Once the historical association finds a new location, it is expected the county will use that space to provide more room for District 5 Probation offices. Comments are closed.
