YORK – The York County Commissioners have officially set Dec. 9 as the date for a special election regarding the matter of recalling Commissioner LeRoy Ott. After enough verified signatures were turned in to the county clerk’s office, County Clerk Mary Melby then asked the county board members to pass a resolution setting the date.
All the commissioners voted in favor of the resolution with Ott abstaining. Melby will now ask the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office for permission to hold an all-mail election (as she says this is the most cost-effective form of election) – with the ballot return date being Dec. 9. That means all ballots must be returned to her office by that day at 5 p.m. The counting of ballots will take place that evening. Melby said voters in District 2 will receive their ballots sometime between Nov. 17 and Dec. 1. Voters will be able to mail their ballots back, bring them to the election office and the clerk's office, as well as leave them in the locked box in front of the courthouse. While the front locked box is being utilized for ballots, only Melby will have access to its contents. Registered voters in District 2 will participate in this election with the majority determining the outcome. If the majority votes in favor of recall, Ott’s service will end immediately. If the majority votes against recall, the matter ends and Ott’s service as commissioner will continue. Comments are closed.
