YORK – This past week, the York County Sheriff’s Office held its year-end award event and one of the awards was for exceptional duty. It was given to Deputy Brandon Huebner. As explained by York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka, on April 13, 2024, at 12:04 a.m., Deputy Huebner initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near mile marker 345 for speeding. During the course of the traffic stop, he developed probable cause to search the vehicle.
“During the search, he found 392 personal checks; 1,310 blank checks; and fraudulent identification documents,” the sheriff said. “The checks appeared to have been diverted from the United States Postal Service and stolen from account owners. In total, there were 294 different account holders from six different states affected, and the total sum of the all the checks was just over $222,000. A search warrant was also executed in relation to this case which led to the discovery of two “arrow keys” which are used by postal workers to access mail collection boxes. “Deputy Huebner enlisted the help of the United States Postal Inspection Service which took over the case investigation,” Sheriff Vrbka explained. “The postal inspector assigned to the case commented how Deputy Huebner’s traffic stop likely prevented hundreds or thousands of dollars’ worth of fraud. Further, the recovery of the arrow keys prevented further occurrences of theft and the effects on citizens whose mail would have been stolen. “The suspect in this case was federally indicted by a grand jury and prosecuted by the Untied States Attorney’s office. The suspect eventually pleaded guilty in the federal court system and is awaiting sentencing,” Sheriff Vrbka said. “This case is an excellent example of proactive police work and looking beyond the stop for criminal activity. Deputy Huebner’s efforts in this case undoubtedly made a difference and helped hundreds of account holders in numerous states who were victims.” Comments are closed.
