YORK – The installation of internet fiber in southern York County, in the second round of work by Glenwood Telecommunications, has been completed. This project makes high speed internet available, via fiber, to 53 otherwise unserved locations in the Lushton area.
Representatives of the company met with the York County Commissioners this past week, to provide a project update. The county financially participated in this project, as an effort to expand high speed internet services in the rural areas of the county. The company applied for a grant to help pay for this project with the county also appropriating $400,000 to help make it happen. In all, this was a $1.4 million project. $981,961.98 of that came from a Nebraska Public Service Commission grant. Aaron Wescoat said the work was completed Aug. 13 “and then the clean-up process took place. Let us know if more needs to be done. We started drops to homes Nov. 4.” He said a number of rural residents have already signed up and are receiving high speed internet services – others can join as well. As far as a state program (BEAD) which would have expanded fiber throughout the state, both Wescoat and Josh Henderson said their company was not participating and it looked like most the projects being considered are satellite-internet related.
