YORK – Internet companies will be bidding for their opportunities to do projects in rural York County, as federal dollars are being provided in an effort to expand broadband through unserved and underserved areas. This past week, a representative of one of those companies stopped in to speak with the York County Commissioners, noting there will be several project areas in this county.
He explained how the state broadband office has already identified areas and York County “is unique in that you have 11 project areas, so there will be 11 projects for which providers will be bidding.” Federal funds will be awarded to the winning bids and the projects will take place. The internet representative said the projects “will take place fast. I just wanted to make sure you were aware and I imagine you will be hearing from other providers as well.” While the bulk of the funding is federal, the providers will have to come up with a 25% match. An area is defined as being unserved or underserved based on the internet speed which now exists. The participation of counties is centered on letters of support for specific projects. “The federal money allows providers the ability to do rural broadband projects, as it makes it financially feasible,” he added. “York County has been somewhat proactive in trying to expand broadband, we have had two projects so far, so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out,” said Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier.
