YORK COUNTY – The majority of York County voters said judges up for retention consideration in Judicial District 5 should be retained. Judges are appointed by the governor but they must run for retention in office in the first general election which occurs more than three years after his or her appointment and every six years thereafter, according to the Nebraska Supreme Court. The judicial retention system was adopted by Nebraska voters as a constitutional amendment in 1962. Originally, it applied only to the selection of judges to the Supreme Court and district courts. Since then, it has been extended to include all of Nebraska’s state judges.
Locally, voters were likely most familiar with York County District Judge James Stecker and York County Judge Lynelle Homolka. In York County, 4,285 people said Judge Stecker should be retained while 1,165 said he shouldn’t. In York County, 4,315 said Judge Homolka should be retained while 1,038 said she shouldn’t.
