YORK COUNTY -- Just a couple of months into the 2024-25 fiscal year, the York County Commissioners had to transfer $10,000 into the fund called State Institutions as York County Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier said said, "we've had a tremendous amount of EPCs in the first months of this fiscal year." EPCs stands for Emergency Protection Custody. This means law enforcement has to take into custody individuals who are a danger to themselves and/or the public. They cannot be housed in the general jail population due to their mental health needs, which are determined to be immediate upon the call/response.
The county spends thousands of dollars each year to contract with outside agencies to accept these individuals when cases arise, as locally those services are not provided. The county holds contracts with those agencies to accept individuals when needed. Comments are closed.
