YORK – There are still positions open at the York County Jail – one position for a male correctional officer and another position for a female correctional officer. The two openings, especially the slot for a female correctional officer, need to be filled as soon as possible and interested individuals are encouraged to apply.
The York County Commissioners met with Janelle Vice, head of York County Corrections, and York County Sheriff Captain Josh Gillespie this past week, during the board members’ quarterly jail visit. Captain Gillespie noted how Vice has been “doing an amazing job, a fantastic job” as the head of corrections, while also filling the open shifts because they are so short-handed. “She is doing a great job but we don’t want to burn her out,” Captain Gillespie said. “But she has been really doing a phenomenal job.” Vice noted Tuesday morning how the county inmate number has gone down slightly, compared to what it had been in the recent past. At that point, she said they had “20 inmates on site and we are taking two to penitentiaries today.” In the last few years, the jail capacity has consistently run at 30 or higher. She also noted that while the inmate number had been slightly down, there had also been two major medical situations in recent days. Those medical bills will be coming to the commissioners in the near future and the amounts will likely be substantial. The county is responsible for paying all medical bills for inmates while they are in the county’s custody. Comments are closed.
