YORK – As the York County Commissioners took their quarterly tour of the York County Jail this past week, York County Sheriff Captain Josh Gillespie and York County Correctional Officer Nic Marsden said the inmate population number remains high. The population at the jail was at 27 people on Tuesday, Jan. 7, with several people staying in other locations for a variety of reasons.
York County Commissioner Randy Obermier asked if there was a way to have York County inmates be housed in county jails rather than with the state department of correctional services, as the cost is higher when the county’s inmates are cared for in state prisons. Gillespie and Marsden said they try to avoid that arrangement when possible, but some inmates have to be housed in prison facilities for a variety of reasons, including if they are dangerous to themselves or others, if they are creating altercations with other inmates, if they actively aggressive or need special services the county facility cannot provide. Right now, the county has two inmates housed in state prisons. It was noted new security cameras will be installed in the jail starting next week and work continues toward starting the big project of installing a fire suppression system in the jail.
