YORK – This week, the York County Commissioners went on their quarterly tour/visit of the York County Jail, which is required by Nebraska Jail Standards. During these tours/visits, the commissioners meet with the sheriff’s department and corrections staff, discuss the population figures, ask questions and hear concerns.
This week, the county commissioners met with York County Head of Corrections Sheriff’s Deputy Jordan Dickson. As of Tuesday, Oct. 15, there were 31 people in custody at the York County Jail – the maximum capacity is 32. “It’s a little higher than where we typically want to see as far as the number of people in jail,” Dickson said, in reference to how they want to keep the number around 28 in order to have open cells for other individuals who might be arrested. In order to keep the number at that level, some inmates have to be housed in other county jails with York County paying for the inmates’ care. The county has contracts with other counties, outlining what fee, per day, will be paid, as it is the county’s responsibility to care for each inmate while they are in county custody, including medical and dental care. Dickson said jail operations were going smoothly and they are pretty much fully staffed. One more position could be used, he noted, in an ideal world. “But we are operating right along,” Dickson said. The York County Jail has typically been right at capacity for a number of years now.
