YORK – York County Clerk Mary Melby says her office has certified the signatures on a petition asking for a special election regarding the possible recall of District 2 York County Commissioner LeRoy Ott and there are enough signatures to move forward. Now, she will ask the York County Commissioners to approve the special election, with a date tentatively set for Nov. 11.
Once that happens, she will ask for permission from the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office to allow the special election to take place via mail. That means all registered voters in District 2 will receive ballots in the mail – which have to be returned to the clerk’s office by the end of the workday on Nov. 11. Then the ballots will be counted with the majority determining the outcome. If the majority votes yes to recall Ott, his time on the county board will end. If the majority votes no, he will continue his role on the county board. If he is recalled, as explained by Melby, a committee consisting of the county attorney, treasurer and clerk will be assigned the task of appointing someone to fill Ott’s term. Interested individuals will have an opportunity to submit their applications and the committee will make the decision. Comments are closed.
