YORK – Sgt. Taylor Samek has been given the York County Sheriff’s Office’s life-saving award for the past year. Those who nominated Sgt. Samek for this award, including Captain Josh Gillespie, explained how on May 5, Sgt. Samek responded to a call of an unresponsive party who was unconscious and “gurgling” which they suspected was agonal breathing. The woman had recently had surgery and was taking pain medication.
“Sgt. Samek entered the residence and saw a 77-year-old woman who was in medical crisis. Her daughter was in the process of administering CPR. The woman appeared to have very shallow breathing. Based on the details of the situation, Sgt. Samek suspected there may have been a potential opioid overdose and he administered Narcan. “With very little response to the Narcan, Sgt. Samek applied his automatic external defibrillator pads to her chest,” Captain Gillespie said further. “Sgt. Samek was advised no shock was needed at that time. He continued CPR and after a short period of time, the woman gasped for air and appeared to have a painful response to the compressions. “York Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and took over providing medical attention. Fire personnel suspected she had experienced a cardiac event and she was transported to York General Hospital and later to a hospital in Lincoln.” Captain Gillespie said the daughter of the woman was “extremely grateful for Sgt. Samek’s actions.” The award was given to Sgt. Samek this past week as the sheriff’s department had their end-of-year awards event. Comments are closed.
