Sheriff: NDOT to conduct study of problematic intersections along Highway 81 bypass in York7/22/2024
YORK -- York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka says he has been informed the Nebraska Department of Transportation will be conducting engineering/traffic studies at several problematic intersections along the Highway 81 bypass around York. In the past couple of months, there have been numerous fatal crashes in York County. And before that, since the bypass was created, there have been numerous fatal and serious injury accidents particularly at the East Highway 34 Junction, the intersection with Highway 34 and the intersection with West Fourth Street (Recharge Road).
These have all led to many people asking if something can be done along that corridor to make the intersections safer. Sheriff Vrbka reached out to State Senator Jana Hughes and said he would pursue asking state officials for their help as Highway 81 and Highway 34 are state highways. Then, this past Tuesday, Sheriff Vrbka became aware new rumble bars have been installed on the west side of the Highway 34/Highway 81 intersection. "I called our local office for the Nebraska Department of Transportation to thank them for their quick action in implementing any type of safety measure right away," Sheriff Vrbka said. "I was told the NDOT district office had that work done so I called the district manager to thank him as well. It was during that conversation I was told the NDOT will be conducting a traffic/engineering study out there and they also will be installing rumble bars at the Highway 34 East Junction and Recharge Road intersections. I thanked them to starting the process right away, it shows they needed to do something. I'm thankful for their response and that they are being active in responding. I'm glad they are on top of this and their response show they care about the safety at this stretch of highway in York County." Comments are closed.
