Voter registration encouraged, clerk/election officials can help

YORK – Voter registration is encouraged for those who have not yet done so and want to participate in the November General Election.

​Currently, according to the Nebraska Secretary of State office, there are 9,274 registered voters in York County. Of those, 6,241 are Republican; 1,337 are Democrats; 106 are registered as Libertarians; 38 are registered with the Legal Marijuana NOW party; one person is registered with No Labels Nebraska; and 1,551 are registered as non-partisan.
To register in person, print out the form found at https://www.yorkcounty.ne.gov/elections.html and either drop it off in person or mail to the York County Clerk at the York County Courthouse.
To register online, go to https://www.yorkcounty.ne.gov/elections.html and click on the appropriate link.
Individuals may register in person through the State Department of Motor Vehicles when applying for or renewing their driver’s license.
There are deadlines to register to vote as the election nears. Interested individuals can contact the county clerk’s office for further details.
There are voter registration requirements:

• Age: To register to vote, you must be 18 years old. If you are 17 years old and will be 18 by the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November, you can register.
• Residence: To register, you must be a resident of Nebraska and of the county where you are registering. If you move to another county, you must re-register.
• Citizenship: You must be a United States citizen in order to register to vote.
• Felony conviction: If you have been convicted of a felony, either in Nebraska or another state or in federal court, you cannot register to vote until your civil rights have been restored.
• Mentally competent: If you have been found by a court to be mentally incompetent, you cannot register to vote.

There are also easy ways to make sure you are a registered voter, if you are not sure. According to the York County Clerk’s office, “The quickest way to check if you are a registered voter in Nebraska is to visit the Nebraska Voter Information Lookup website. You will need to enter your name and the county you believe you are registered in. If your voter registration is not associated with the county in which you currently reside, you will need to complete a new voter registration, at www.votercheck.necvr.ne.gov/voterview/. You can also call or stop by the York County Clerk/Voter Registration offices and ask them to look up the information for you.”
