YORK – When the York County Commissioners meet in regular session on Tuesday, Jan. 6 – the first meeting in 2026 – they will start with reorganization of the board. What this means is they will be choosing a chairman of the board and a chairman of the board of equalization.
In the past, these positions were always held by the same person. Last year, the two chairman positions were held by different commissioners – Randy Obermier served as chairman of the commissioners and Daniel Grotz served as chairman of the board of equalization. Also during Tuesday’s meeting, they will go back to their conversation about salaries for all the elected officials for the years of 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030. The salaries must be established during Tuesday’s meeting, as it has to be accomplished before filing starts in this year’s election cycle. During their last meeting, two weeks ago, they agreed to not raise the salary for county board members – it will stay the same as it is during that four-year timeframe. They still have yet to set salaries for the county attorney, sheriff, public defender, clerk, assessor, treasurer and clerk of the district court. Another agenda item will be authorizing the chairman to sign emergency declarations during 2026 and act on closing the courthouse when an emergency arises. The board will be asked to appoint Kreig Schmidt to the York County Visitors Bureau Board of Directors and take action regarding the county’s emergency management position. As the board of equalization, they will discuss and act on tax list corrections. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, which will begin at 8:30 a.m., in the commissioners’ meeting room which is located next door to the clerk’s office on the main floor of the courthouse.
