YORK – York County Highway Superintendent Harvey Keim officially retired this past week after 11 years of running the county roads department. A public open house was held at the county shop, as county officials and residents took a moment to express their appreciation to Keim for his service.
He began his work with York County in 2014. He remembers he literally arrived in York County at the same time a tornado was touching the ground within his jurisdiction. “Talk about a way to start,” Keim joked. There have been all kinds of challenges through the years – damage left behind after storms like that on his first day, major blizzards, heavy rains with flooding. And of course, there was the challenge of making sure all 1,100 miles of the county’s rural roads were being maintained. A substantial number of bridges were rebuilt during Keim’s tenure and there have been crucial paving projects as well. Keim said he appreciated the opportunity to work with York County and he especially appreciated all the hard work his crews have done over the years. York County Commissioner Daniel Grotz, said, “On behalf of the York County Board of Commissioners, we thank Harvey for the time and energy he has put into York County roads and wish him well in this next chapter.” What’s next for Keim? He says some people have reached out, offering opportunities for him to come work for them in some capacity – he smiled as he said that’s not really on his radar right now. He seems to be dedicated to really focusing on the theory of retirement. His first course of action? Deer hunting. “I’m going to go sit in a deer stand for a while,” Keim said, chuckling. “Yep, deer hunting is next on my schedule. And that sounds pretty darn good.” Comments are closed.
