YORK – The daunting task of moving the entire York County Historical Association collection is now complete. All of the items were moved by board members and volunteers from the building by the fairgrounds to the new location in the Chapman building in downtown York.
Now, the items will be completely gone through, sorted, cataloged, prepared for display and storage. This detailed task will take some time, but the big job of making the move is done. York County Commissioner Andy Bowman, who sits on the historical association board, told the county board how the move is done and the former location is now available for some renovation. “That location needs a lot of work as it hasn’t been touched since the 1960s,” Bowman said. That building is owned by the county. One side has been used by District 5 Probation while the historical association was on the other side. Eventually, the probation offices will expand over to the other side, utilizing the entire building. “Probation has been chomping at the bit,” said Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier. “I know Brian and Cal (building and grounds staff) went up there to take a look and I know it will need some work.” The county is statutorily responsible for providing office space for probation and the request for more space has repeatedly been made. The more space is due to more probation officers being in York County, due to higher counts of probation cases. The extent of the work at the former historical association location hasn’t yet been determined. Comments are closed.
