York County Sheriff’s office recognized with MADD Hero Award

YORK – Sergeant Taylor Samek, Deputy Brandon Huebner and Deputy Deion Hulse from the York County Sheriff’s Office have been recognized with a MADD Hero Award for their DUI enforcement efforts in 2025.

​This recognition from Mothers Against Drunk Driving reflects the YSO’s commitment to keeping impaired drivers off roadways and protecting the communities they serve.
During the year, the enforcement efforts of these three individuals resulted in:

• 1,953 traffic stops
• 71 DUI arrests
• 37 Drug Influence Evaluations
• 16 Minor in Possession citations

Of the 71 DUI arrests:

• 7 involved felony DUI offenders
• 18 involved drivers with previous DUI convictions
• The average BrAC was .167 — more than twice the legal limit

In several of these cases, deputies recovered children from vehicles being operated by alcohol or drug impaired drivers. During 2025, eight children were located in vehicles driven by impaired individuals. In incidents involving drug impaired drivers, children present later tested positive for substances including methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, resulting in additional criminal charges.
“Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal crashes. Proactive enforcement is not about writing tickets or making arrests — it's about preventing tragedies before they happen and protecting innocent lives,” the YSO said in a statement.
Sgt. Samek added, "In addition to being recognized, we also had the opportunity to hear from several family members of victims who lost their lives to impaired drivers. It was some of the most impactful testimony I have heard regarding the aftermath of losing a family member in an impaired driving crash. It definitely sent the message home that a decision to drive impaired by drugs or alcohol can have lifelong devasting effects on a family."
