YORK COUNTY – The sheriff’s office will be participating in the “Put The Phone Away or Pay” mobilization campaign through the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office, according to Sgt. Taylor Samek. “This campaign will be taking place from April 7 to April 14, and we will have extra deputies out conducting high visibility traffic enforcement on the roadways throughout York County,” Sgt. Samek said.
In Nebraska in 2022, there were 3,185 drivers involved in distracted driving crashes and the number rose to 3,405 in 2023. Nationwide, distracted driving claimed 3,308 lives in 2022 alone “and we have seen a rise in fatal crashes in Nebraska as well. We would like to encourage people to put their phone down while they drive as no text message or social media distraction is worth your or someone else’s life. “As always, we would like to encourage motorists to report suspected distracted or impaired drivers to the York County Sheriff’s Office by calling 402-362-4927,” Sgt. Samek said. Comments are closed.
