YORK COUNTY – York County will soon be asking for applications and hiring a new weed superintendent, upon the resignation of the last person to hold the position. They will also be making some changes in how whomever holds this position will be directly reporting to the county highway superintendent.
“We are just looking to add some continuity,” Commissioner Andy Bowman explained. “We think it’s best that the weed superintendent reports to the highway superintendent on the day to day. It just makes sense. We just need to make a change to the job description saying this position reports to the head of the roads department rather than the county board as it is worded now.” He said he has been told there are several people interested in the job and they will be taking applications from the public. “Other than that, I don’t see any major changes,” Bowman said. Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier suggested they also review the employee handbook to see if that has to be altered and he’d like to see the county attorney’s office consulted in the matter. “Being a state mandated position, I totaling agree with the reporting structure being through the highway superintendent,” said Commissioner Daniel Grotz. “I just wonder if the larger decisions like the budget for that department need to go through the county board, we might need some clarity there. This isn’t a full-time job – well, not the weed portion itself. Do we also need to classify this position as part-time weeds and part-time roads?” “That’s how it’s stated now,” Bowman said. “We can word it how we want.” The county board agreed to have the weed superintendent report to the highway superintendent, performing weed work as well as work for the roads department during the off-season and in non-busy times.
