By 2030, more than a quarter of county’s population will be over 65

YORK – Against Partners made its request for county funds, in this year’s budget, during the commissioners’ recent meeting, while also discussing the projections of more people in the county being over 65 years of age.

​Kay Wensel said they are requesting $40,225 this year, which is a 2 ½% increase over last year.

She explained how these funds are used to support the local program.

Aging services in York are very active and help many people. Wensel provided numbers which showed how in the last year, 659 individuals were served in some capacity.

“The need to grow services continues as services are currently reaching 22% of county citizens who are 65 and older,” Wensel said.

“York County is aging,” Wensel said. “In 2017, 26% of the county’s population was 60 and over. Between 2015 and 2030, the population of persons age 65 and over is expected to increase 32%. More York County residents will seek services to remain healthy and independent in their own homes.

“Revenue to support this work includes county tax support, state and federal funds from Aging Partners, state and federal funds direct to the county programs, including the Nebraska Department of Transportation support of the rural transit program and local private funds,” she continued.

In the 2022-23 fiscal year, 352 case hours were spent working with 659 people who needed Medicare D reviews in York County. Regarding senior meals in the county – 4,658 meals were served with 156 total consumers.

And older adults in the county received 12,299 rides, thanks to the county’s transit program.
