Commissioners hear end-of-year report from health department

YORK – Each January, the York County Commissioners hear a year-end report from the Four Corners Health Department, regarding the agency’s work over the last 12 months. 

​Laura McDougall, Four Corners director, told the commissioners they have been very busy, working in a myriad of different areas concerning public health.
“We were in schools a lot this past year with preventative dental work,” she said. “We provided sealants kids’ teeth which is a wonderful thing. People can opt in for this program, as it is voluntary, and we have a lot of kids who do not have regular dental providers. We also provide fluoride varnishes and screenings. We have a lot of unconnected kids because of access issues for kids on Medicaid in rural areas of the state. We have 427 students take part in the program in our four counties and 57 were referred (for further care). Eleven were referred for urgent dental care. We supplied $79,858 worth of dental care with this program, which was funded by a $20,000 grant.”
McDougall said Four Corners hopes to have another household hazardous waste event in the health district, this year, “so stay tuned.”
“We are also working with the Upper Big Blue Natural Resource District on private well testing,” McDougall said, regarding the district’s activities, “and we have been helping train people how to effectively use Narcan.” Narcan is a product which is used in emergency situations to help save people who have been exposed to drugs like fentanyl and/or may have overdosed.
She said they continue to hold programs for senior citizens as well as providing radon testing kids.
“And they also have their big building project going on,” offered York County Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier. The Four Corners building on North Lincoln Avenue will soon undergo a major renovation – utilizing a federal grant has placed a lot of protocol that has to be followed first.
