County approves $603,000 bid to construct three bridges

YORK COUNTY – This week, the York County Commissioners agreed with recommendations made by York County Highway Superintendent Harvey Keim to accept a $600,000 bid for the reconstruction of three rural bridges. 

​The bridges have been tagged as Gresham Southwest, Gresham South and Thayer Southeast.
The commissioners will be using ARPA funds (federal COVID-relief dollars) to finance the projects.
They went out for bids, asking companies to bid the construction of all three bridges as one project. With the bridges being near one another, the intent was to find savings by using one contractor to do all three in the same timeframe.
They received three bids:

• Norfolk Contracting Inc. with a total cost of $603,423. The individual bridge bids were: Gresham SW, $215,865; Thayer SE, $184,660; and Gresham S, $202,898. The tentative start date was March 18. 
• Midwest Infrastructure with a total cost of $618,599.39. The individual bridge bids were: Gresham SW, $222,064.55; Thayer SE, $199,893.11; Gresham S, $196,641.73. The tentative start date was April 1.
• JJK Construction with a total cost of $888,382.51. The individual bridge bids were: Gresham SW, $318,035.67; Thayer SE, $298,299.71; and Gresham S, $272,047.13. The tentative start date was Jan. 8.

Keim reviewed the bids and came back with a recommendation to accept the bid from Norfolk Contracting.
“This will help us keep up with our infrastructure,” said Commissioner Chairman Randy Obermier.
It was noted these bridges will be replaced with wider structures to better accommodate the larger farming equipment seen in today’s world of agriculture.
The commissioners agreed to move forward with the Norfolk Contracting bid.
