County transfers money for depleted funds at end of fiscal year

​​YORK – The York County Commissioners had to transfer money this week to some depleted funds, due to unforeseen budget shortfalls, as the county’s fiscal year comes to an end.

They transferred $37,000 to cover the shortfall in the county court account. York County Commissioner Randy Obermier said the shortfall was due to the hiring of outside public defenders and large bills coming in batches instead of increments. They took unused money out of building and grounds to cover the deficit.

They also had to transfer $3,000 from the district court fund to child support.

An additional $30,000 was transferred between the county attorney fund and child support fund to clean up money that was paid to a new deputy attorney.

And $44,000 was transferred from the building and grounds fund to corrections. Obermier said the shortfall was largely due to the amount of money that had to be paid to other counties to house inmates, because the local jail was already full.

The budget authorities were changed, therefore the 2022-23 budget will be altered to reflect that, following the commissioners’ actions this week.

The commissioners approved all the transfers.

The county’s new fiscal year starts on July 1.
