YORK COUNTY – A new meeting date has been set for interviews of York County Commissioner District 2 candidates. The meeting had initially been set for last Tuesday, Jan. 16. However, it was determined the county clerk, treasurer and attorney would continue accepting candidate applications and postpone the meeting for a variety of reasons.
The weather played a big part in the situation. Two people – Tony Cain and LeRoy Ott – had already sent in their applications. However, one of them was unable to attend Monday’s interview process. York County Attorney Gary Olson also noted one person informed them he had tried to turn in his application on the earlier deadline day, but the courthouse was closed due to blizzard conditions. He said yet another person said they had attempted to email in an application but was unsuccessful in having someone recognize it by the deadline, due to the courthouse being closed. And yet another issue plagued the process for last Tuesday’s meeting, as the appointment must be made by the clerk, treasurer and attorney. Olson said one of the three-member panel was unable to attend due to illness. All that said, the process will continue as the county clerk’s office will be accepting resumes from applicants until the end of Jan. 25. They can be sent to the clerk’s office at 510 North Lincoln Avenue, York, NE 68467 or sent to [email protected]. Then the public interview meeting will be held at 5 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 29, in the county commissioners’ meeting room. During that meeting, the three-person panel will interview the applicants and a vote to determine who will fill the position. This process will result in someone being appointed to fulfilling the position of District 2 County Commissioner which was vacated by the death of Commissioner Woody Ziegler. This term ends at the end of this calendar year. Whomever is appointed will have to file as an incumbent candidate for the 2023 election cycle if they wish to continue serving next year.
