YORK -- After many years of waiting, the day might finally arrive in which the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) will finish what it started with the completion of the four-lane stretch of Highway 81, from York to Columbus. Years ago, the four-lane expansion was completed from Kansas to the York bypass -- but when it was supposed to keep moving north, the project suddenly stopped. For many years, local and state officials pushed for the four-lane conversion to continue, due to economic and safety reasons.
Now, it appears it will not only be revived, it might actually happen. The NDOT will be hosting a series of open house meetings within the footprint of this project. The NDOT says it is hosting these public information open house meetings regarding the proposed expansion of U.S. Highway 81 from a two-lane highway to a four-lane expressway, along an approximately 41-mile segment, in York, Polk and Butler Counties. The NDOT says these meetings are being held to provide information. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the project and ask questions of the project team. No formal presentation is planned and all three meetings will present the same information. Project information will also be available on the NDOT website at ndot.info/42967.
