YORK – Permissive exemption applications for entities which have had allowable property tax exemptions in the past must be sent in soon, as the deadline is nearing.
This application will be for 2024. The applications are due back to the York County Assessor’s office by Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 5 p.m. All applications received after that date will be assessed a penalty, according to state law.
York County Assessor Kurt Bulgrin stressed how, “Due to changes in state law, it is very important that every field on the application is filled out and the form is completed in its entirety. Recently passed legislation now requires the applicant to provide an amount in the ‘Value of Real Property’ field. If that field is left blank, state law requires the application be automatically denied.”
Giving a value to these properties might seem daunting to applicants, because these non-profit educational, religious, organizational entities’ properties have not already been assessed because they are exempt.
Bulgrin said if an entity doesn’t know what value to put in that “Value of Real Property” field, “it is recommended you enter the amount for which your property is insured.”
If an entity – which may be a church, as an example – has been exempt in the past but does not receive the application in the near future, they should contact the assessor’s office. And if an entity believes they have a property that should be exempt because they qualify but haven’t applied before, they should contact the assessor’s office.
“You can return your completed application to the assessor’s office by email at firstname.lastname@example.org; by mail at 510 North Lincoln Avenue, York, NE 68467 in care of the assessor’s office; or they can be placed in the drop box in front of the courthouse. They can also be hand-delivered to the assessor’s office which is located on the first floor of the courthouse,” Bulgrin said. “And of course, if anyone has questions, they can call us at 402-362-4926.”
