Sheriff urges heightened awareness on local roads as spring farm work starts up

YORK COUNTY – York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka is urging heightened awareness on local roads, “now that it’s been so warm out, will consistently be nicer out and the farmers are getting out there, doing their thing, at this time of year.”

He said he received a call this week regarding a near-collision between a car and a truck pulling anhydrous tanks, at an intersection along Highway 34.
“I just think this time of year it's appropriate to remind everyone there will be tractors, trucks, farming machinery on our roads, moving slower than other vehicles and there will be a lot more of them than we see when it’s not farming season,” Sheriff Vrbka said. “We just want to remind everyone to maybe heighten their awareness on the roads and pay attention, take a little extra care, which will keep everyone safe.”
As he does each spring and fall, the sheriff revisited some road safety tips: “reduce speed when encountering farm equipment on public roads; flashing amber lights mean caution; the orange and red reflective triangle also warns you the tractor or other equipment travels at a slow rate of speed; keep a safe distance from the farm equipment so farmers can see you.”
