York County emergency manager encourages severe weather preparedness

​YORK COUNTY – “Preparedness for weather events is important for families, businesses and communities,” says Gary Petersen, York/Seward County emergency management director. “Severe weather can occur quickly and unexpectantly. Receiving notifications of weather events can increase the time available to prepare.”

​Petersen provided the following:
Notification and information options include:

• Phone weather apps from a variety of sources including television stations
• Warning sirens. These are for outdoor notifications only and will not always be heard indoors.
• Local tv and radio stations. KTMX 104.9 in York is an excellent source of information during severe weather.
• National Weather Service web sites:

• County mass notification system;

• Weather radios. These can be purchased locally, or for those in need, a limited number can be obtained free by contacting Seward/York Emergency Management. Some include a pillow shaker/strobe light bundle for those with additional needs. They are preprogrammed for Seward or York County. If interested in a weather radio include in email your name, address and contact information to; [email protected]  Also include if there is a need for the bundle attachments. Limited number available, one per household. Grant funded, not for resale.
• Petersen also encouraged people to “never rely on form of weather notification.”
