York County Sheriff’s Department recognized by U.S. Homeland Security

YORK COUNTY – York County Sheriff’s deputies have been recognized by the United States Department of Homeland Security for their diligent work which resulted in the end of “horrific abuse” which they discovered in York. 

​According to information from YSO Captain Josh Gillespie, “On August 2, 2022, the York County Sheriff’s Office assisted the York Police Department on what was described as a disturbance at the 3700 block of Lincoln Avenue.

“While attempting to locate individuals involved in the disturbance a juvenile and a male adult were contacted by York County deputies. Through the investigation it was discovered the juvenile had been subjected to horrific abuse while he was living in Texas.

“The York Police Department, York Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services and BraveBe Child Advocacy center all assisted in the investigation. Members of each of these organizations played a part in ending the years of horrific abuse that the juvenile had suffered,” Captain Gillespie says.

David Calhoun was subsequently convicted of all the charges he faced. This led to a punishment of 10 life sentences and other sentences of 10 and 20 years. Five of the life sentences were ordered to be served consecutively. The attorney in the case described it as “worst abuse that I have ever seen.”

For their assistance in this case, the Department of Homeland Security nominated two York County deputies, three members of the York Police Department, three members of BraveBe Child Advocacy Center and a member of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to receive recognition for their work on this case.
