York County Sheriff’s Department to have extra enforcement at Highway 81 intersections

​YORK COUNTY -- Over the past year, the York County Sheriff's Office has responded to numerous injury collisions along the Highway 81 corridor throughout York County. 

York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka says these collisions “predominantly occurred during the morning commuting hours as individuals traveled to work or in the afternoon hours when workers are commuting back home. The cause of these collisions varied, but speed, failing to stop or yield for traffic, and driving without lights were all reoccurring factors we have seen.”
During the month of March, the York County Sheriff's Office will have deputies providing extra traffic enforcement along Highway 81 and will be paying special attention to the following intersections:

• Highway 81 and Highway 34 Junction East
• Highway 81 and Highway 34 Junction West
• Highway 81 and West Fourth Street/Recharge Road
• Highway 81 and Road 4 (McCool Junction)

“Our office’s goal with this campaign is to help reduce collisions in these areas of Highway 81 and make it safer for our residents during their commutes to and from work,” says York County Sheriff Sergeant Taylor Samek. “The funding for this overtime traffic enforcement campaign is provided by the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO).
